On Sunday February 28th at Alexander Gastown, get ready to boogie down with threetime Grammy award winner Chin Injeti and his funkadelic new project The Lifetimes; as they play the best of the best 80’s jams, accompanied again by a selection of Vancouver’s finest singers. Get those song requests in on the Facebook page and the band will pick their favorites to learn for the show. REQUEST LINE is the second event hosted by Chin that aims to raise money for refugees and partial proceeds for this event will go towards supporting a family of five via the MCC Canada Charity.
When Chin first arrived in Canada with his family from India, he lived in a Filipino community. From an early age he was effected by Polio and lost the ability to walk. However, it was through his illness that Chin found strength and inspiration through music; using it as therapy to move forward.
Now established as a world class music producer living in Vancouver, Chin often finds himself looking back to the time when he first arrived in the country. In their new surroundings, his family were luckily enough to be supported by their local community who helped them celebrate their first Christmas by giving them dishes, clothes and Chin’s first wheelchair.
Now with an influx of refugees arriving in Canada, many of whom will find themselves in a similar situation to Chin’s when he first arrived, he wants bring the city of Vancouver together to support and welcome them into the community.
As a young, progressive city full of energy and optimism the potential for musical talent in Vancouver is huge. There are, however, few who have managed to make their mark on a global scale and really put the city on the map as a musical and creative hub.
Shifts in perspective and business need to change in order to create the musical spark within this city and creatives need to come together to support the community. REQUEST LINE will not only bring together the best musical talent that Vancouver has to offer, but will also get them to work alongside one another to support their movements as one.
The stellar lineup for the 28th, includes Parker Bossley, Moka Only, Kyprios, David Beckingham, Dawn Pemberton, JP Maurice, Sean and Aaron Ross from The Boom Booms, Colleen Rennison from No Sinner, Chi Turner, Carolynne Collyer, Claire Mortifee, Rian Peters (UK) and David Vertesi. Also, on the ones and twos we have DJ Flipout, with DJ Pluv from Slow Jam Sundays.
Great music not only has the ability to connect people through the shared experience of sound, but can help build communities, create opportunities and form new identities.
Canadian rapper Drake is the perfect example of this and through his music he has been able to shine the media spotlight onto the city of Toronto; building a movement and working with local talent to create art that is getting global recognition. The wave, has gone further than music and has put Toronto on the map as creative hub and sought after destination.
Vancouver has the same potential and it is community building musical events such as the REQUEST LINE that will be the catalyst for this movement.
This is an ongoing and growing movement: an event that we aim to host bi-monthly. Progressing our vision and increasing our following we will continue to showcase local musical and creative talent until the world takes notice.
