A Brief Guide to Levitation
This weekend the City of Vancouver will host a music festival. It doesn’t do it often, nearly ever really, so it’s important that we pay attention.
Levitation will be the “late” twin sister of Austin Psych Fest (occurring annually from xx-xx). It is a unique event tailored made for one the USA’s coolest cities and most distinct music scenes. Timbre promotions was the pivotal medium in creating such an unprecedented chance for Vancouver to start proving it’s worth as an ideal locale for urban, “conference” style music festivals.
The event will be spread out over 3 days and 4 venues, centralized in the Eastside and at the Malkin Bowl in Stanley Park, starting tonight.
Unlike other festivals, where multiple stages over a number of days create frustrating conflicts, or tricky terrain and hard-to-find amenities call for a festie cheat-sheet, Levitation is in our frontyard and promises to transition smoothly from day to night. Not to mention the weather is going to be positively tropical this weekend (which is rare for a westcoast June.) So really, as long as you buy tickets and show up with your bike, it’s gonna be great.
But nonetheless, here are some key acts you can’t miss.
The whole thing kicks off tonight, but really gets going tomorrow afternoon at the Malkin Bowl (doors open at 11:30AM). Want something real trippy, true to the psychedelic movements 60’s roots, check out Elephant Stone (Saturday at 3:45PM) – Montreal based sitar player, and one of the most sought after sitar players in the scene. Saturday also hosts two of the big “black” headliners: The Black lips and Black Mountain, both at the bowl starting at 7:45.
From there I will be heading to the Rickshaw for some post-sunburn tropical set by Blackbird Blackbird followed by Shigeto (Rickshaw Theatre starting at 11:00PM).
Sunday is even more straightforward, La Luz, Night Beats, Beach Fossils and the Black Angels will kill the Malkin Bowl. Directly after that catch the Courtneys, Dead Ghosts and King Tuff at the Rickshaw. Or head to the Electric Owl the Cobalt for some more obscure talent.
