As we approach the Song and Surf Music Festival, taking place in Port Renfrew B.C. February 7-9, 2014, we must admit that we are getting more and more excited for this intimiate, west coast experience. The real question is: what’s not to love? Only a few hours drive from Victoria B.C., Song and Surf is incredibly accessible – including one of the Island’s most scenic drives. Spread over three days, over a variety of venues, the festival incorporates a boutique and intimate vibe with top Canadian talent.
Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and old growth forest, Port Renfrew is a west coast gem, and a perfect spot for the gathering of community. Stay for the festival, stay for a week. Cozy beachfront cabin rentals are available for reasonable rates, or stay in an RV/tent in several of the local campsites that specially open for Song and Surf. Shuttle service runs consistently throughout the town, taking festival goers to and from accomodation to the various venues. Alternatively, bring a bike, skate or walk.
In the day, before you venture to the festival, you can hike through old growth forest or take a walk down the beach. Grab your surfboard or kiteboard and session the winter surf, or hit up one of the local eateries. Bring your canoe – go fishing. Bring your dive gear – go diving. Bring your beer – drink Lucky. Honestly, the point here is this is one festival where you have the freedoms of the outdoors, hanging with friends, cozying up to a fire, go surf, listen to great music and party. Can life get any better?
The sunset showcase is one of the many highlights of this festival, featuring acoustic sets by a variety of artists while the sun is setting overlooking beachfront. I mean – COME ON! Later in the evening, full-bands take the stage with electronic shows going until the wee hours of the morning. There is literally something for everyone, no matter what your flavour of the day is.
Did you see the talent? Wil, Good for Grapes, Pigeon Hole, Sam Weber, Skiitour, Sam Demoe, Carmanah, Luca Fogale, Dougal Bain Mclean, Danuel Tate, Quoia, Archers, Shane Phillip and so soooo many more – Song and Surf is going to rapid fire top Canadian talent.
Song and Surf is also the precursor to Tall Tree Music Festival, held the last weekend of June, just outside of Port Renfrew on Browns Mountain. The two festivals build on eachother year after year, growing the loyal community of musicians, artists, organizers, volunteers and attendees. Both festivals donate a majority of proceeds to charities and organizations including the Ancient Forest Alliance, BC Cancer Foundation, Sierra Club and the Tall Tree Youth Development Fund to name a few. Giving back to the community is a signature mandate of each festival – creating a unique precedent that make these two stand out from the rest.
